'Comma' & 'Renversée-Inside Out', 2001

Statement

The body interests me as a perceiving mechanical structure indivisible from the built environment. I am most curious about the reciprocal relationship between the human figure and human behavior within a social context. In Western societies, the body and mind are simultaneously tools and recipients: creating, producing in the search of physical and spiritual comfort versus consuming objects, ideas and standards created by others.

The imagery in my artwork comes from my perception of materials and spatial arrangements. Using the same process as that of an architect, I organize space between parts. I like to engineer structures after postures that challenge a natural state of equilibrium. I include purchased or found objects, questioning standardized conduct and labor. For example, I roll off of a conventional ladder souped-up with counter weights or balance in an inverted position on a totemic tongue-chair.

My installations, sculptures and videos are the result of the syntactic connections between the biological and the environmental. Also, the physical interaction challenges the making of a piece both aesthetically and technically. In upcoming projects, I intend to implement fashion and prosthetic make-up, focusing on womanhood and subverting the advertised female model.

Eve Bailey was born in Nancy, France in 1975. She lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. She received a degree in Architectural Metal Work with Honors from the Olivier De Serres School of Art and Craft and earned her BFA in Sculpture from the Beaux-Arts University School of Art in 2001, both in Paris, France. Recipient of two fellowships to study abroad at the San Francisco Art Institute, Bailey received the school award for best video in 2000. She was awarded several funded residencies: Triangle for the Arts, New York (NY) 2004, Sculpture Space, Utica (NY) 2008 and Bemis Center, Omaha (NE) scheduled in 2009. She also received several commissions as a designer after she won the first Prize of Museum Expression Art and Design Fair at the Louvre in Paris in 1996. She has exhibited her work in Germany at the Kunsthalle of Baden Baden and the NAK of Aachen, in the Netherlands at Artis Gallery (Den Bosch), in France at the Musée Royet Fould (Courbevoie) and the Musée des Beaux-Arts (Paris), in California at the Art Institute and 2C Gallery (San Francisco), in Tennessee at Labarts Gallery (Knoxville) and recently in New York at Triangle for the Arts (Brooklyn) and Cuchifritos Gallery (New York).

Eve Bailey - née en 1975 à Nancy et installée à New York depuis 2002 - utilise son propre corps comme outil de travail et matière première dans la réalisation de vidéos, de sculptures et d' installations basées sur des actions-performances. Dans l' oeuvre intitulée 'Such a Pretty Girl. Behave Yourself.'' (Une Si Jolie Fille. Tiens-toi bien.), l' artiste fait une galipette en talons hauts sur un escabeau adapté à cet effet, enfreignant avec humour les normes d' utilisation et les règles de bonne conduite. Dans la vidéo 'Corps Ivre' , elle s' approprie l' esthétique des chantiers des rues de Brooklyn et met son propre corps en chantier à la manière d' un Sisyphe moderne. A l' occasion de son exposition à l'espace Window, elle présente une série de dessins préparatifs pour son prochain projet de vidéo intitulé 'Xs' (titre provisoire).
Eve Bailey est diplômée de l' Ecole des Métiers d' Arts Olivier De Serres (1996) et de l' Ecole des Beaux- Arts de Paris (2001). Elle obtient deux bourses d' étude - française et américaine - pour un séjour d' un an à l' Institut d' Art de San Francisco durant lequel elle se familiarise avec l' art de la performance. Elle entreprend des actions insolites dans les lieux publiques - bus, restaurants - et les galeries (1999). C' est à son retour à Paris en 2000 qu' elle intègre le mouvement corporel à son travail de sculpteur puisant dans ses acquis en danse classique et dans les arts martiaux. Son travail a été exposé et projeté en France, en Allemagne, aux Pays Bas, aux Etats-Unis et à Cuba. Les expositions récentes incluent On The Edge, A-1 Lab Art Space à Knoxville (TN), 30 second spot, Cuchifritos Gallery et Metaphoric Gestures, Chelsea Art Museum à New York. Les résidences subventionnées incluent Triangle (New York, NY, 2003), Sculpture Space (Utica, NY, 2008) et très prochainement Bemis Center à Omaha (NE) en Août, Septembre et Octobre 2009.
